Internet Filtering

My friend, Amy who is a fellow blogger had a very funny encounter recently. Someone has somehow inserted some codes and all the Google Adsense advertisements that appear on the websites she viewed turned into porn and adult advertisements. She tried and tried to clear it with some softwares but was unsuccessful. Eventually, it was found that it was her IP that had been messed with.

However, she had a hard time explaining to her young son why there are so many nude people on the internet. The lucky thing is her son is barely three years old and hence, doesn’t ask as many questions or is as curious as older children. Otherwise, she had to totally reformat her PC.

This incident has made me rethink about internet filtering and parental control. I am home all the time and hence, able to personally supervise my children and their internet usage. However, what about other parents? Those who go to work during the day and those who are less IT literate. Are they able to do that if they don’t have the
software for parental control? You may ask what is internet filtering and what it filtered? Here is a list :

– Block porn web sites
– Block instant messaging
– Daily time limits
– Block violent web sites
– Block chat messages
– Filter nudity
– Email filtering

With so many kind of intrusions and the danger of people getting too close to our kids, it is certainly good to spread the word around to our friends and colleagues to keep an eye on their children and if needed, get softwares to protect them.
