What is Google Pagerank? (no, this is not a serious piece)

Sometimes, we are so comfortable with some of the terms we use every day that we thought the whole world know what we are talking about. But nope, not everyone is born to be a webmaster or possess the skills. So, this is the basic, ‘guide to pagerank for the dummies’ explanation.

So, what is pagerank?

Peb, your question is not silly at all. It is actually very good to find out things that you are not clear. So, what is pagerank?

Before that, let me tell you, it is better that you are not slaved to this pagerank mania because blogging is so much more fun that way. Once you are sucked into the obsession, blogging is no longer fun but competitive.

Pagerank is like those badges people adorn on their sleeves. The more PR you have, the ‘bigger’ you are. All new sites start with a no PR. Then, you get zero over ten, i.e. 0/10.

Depending on many factors, the site will get higher and higher pagerank. How to achieve that? Read this boring, very lengthy article from Google Webmaster Central or just enjoy blogging without all the hang-ups.

And how do you see this thing call pagerank? Well, only Google gives us pagerank. You can Google for ‘check pagerank’ and use some of the tools available. Or you can download Firefox with Google toolbar which will show you the green juice. BTW, Peb, your site has a PR 0/10.
