What do I do when someone ‘scrap’ aka steal my contents?

Daren asked me what do I do if I find someone taking my content. Well, here are some of the crazy stuffs I did:

1) Once a new blogger took my content and my photos of some delicious cakes. I changed the photos to Saddam Hussein (before he was sentenced to death, i.e. I don’t mess with dead people). It was hilarious and I also sent my readers to fire him.

2) Another time, a food blogger used one of my recipe and photos and place it on her site. Although she gave credit, I never give permission. So, I wrote to the free blog provider service and also to her. Bitch slap her a bit.

3) I have picked up many unknown sites scrapping my contents. Normally they do this because they want the Adsense. So a stern warning left on their comments that you are running to Google Adsense will make them pee in the pants. Google doesn’t take it kindly towards these sort of sites so do your part. Report so that we can reduce the amount of shady sites like these.

4) I remember I did give permission to PlanetMalaysia to aggregate my contents many months or even years ago. That was a RSS feeds with links back to me. However, I recently got uneasy because they seem to be opening a mirror site call planetmy dot inbloggle or something like that. I asked to be removed and they have done so.

I ran Frenzrss and I am using a plugin (sorry I won’t tell which plugin) which picks up the RSS feeds. It is user-submitted. I didn’t do it for Adsense (anyway, it sucks) but rather to keep track of those blogs I know/link/who link me or wish to be part of it. However, the site now has a PR5/10!

I have another ‘secret’ blog which I use to scrap both my food blogs for recipes. I want to compile all the recipes I place on my two food blogs (which covers travel, eating places etc). This is the nasty one because it actually take and keep those contents. The author of the plugin has taken off his plugin because in the end, his own contents got stolen. LOL.

This nasty plugin is the one I want to warn readers about. It is the plugin used by planetmy dot inbloogle (sorry not sure of the URL). Your contents are now in their data. Whereas the one using the RSS plugin like Frenzrss.com is just a ‘passing’ content, i.e. Frenzrss.com does not store your post as it’s post. While the nasty comment plugin will make new posts whenever you do it. BAD!

Personally, I don’t take it kindly if people take advantage of my contents. No doubt, we can see it as an honour that they like it enough to feature what I wrote, I still feel my privacy being evaded. And my obnoxious side will say “Hey, you are not even driving traffic for me, why should I allow it?”

So, report if it bothers you. Normally those sites won’t leave an email for you to write to them or even allow comment. Then, how about a post that warns them in the title? I haven’t done this yet but I think it is fun. Like, “HEY YOU AT (SITE NAME), I HAVE JUST REPORTED YOU TO ADSENSE!” Don’t bother about warning because it is a waste of breath. Remember to take screenshots to prove to Adsense. Find their publisher’s number. (to the noobs, Click View, Page Source and see those html and find the publisher’s number hidden there)

A blogathoner recently scraped my Blogathon in a Nutshell page and didn’t remove the post despite me sending her three emails.

In the end I got fed up and forgot about it. But you know what? I’m feeling naught now so I’m going to replace that picture she stole with a note that says “I stole this from Pelf.”

    Muahhaha ;)

I think the correct word is ‘scrape’ with an E right?

I’m usually not too fused if people use my content but give a reference and a back link – the more link juice the merrier. But outright stealing of content is just a pain in the arse.
