Tutorial : How to manage and upgrade your own WordPress blog – Pt 1 FTP

This is my long overdue tutorial which I promised friends. I hate writing tutorials but I guess it is my duty to share the step-by-step of managing ftp accounts, uploading our files, change themes and upgrade our WordPress blog or anything that deals with own hosting.

I will write this in several parts so as not to confuse the total newbies. I had been there once so I know how frightening it is to deal with something like this. If you have the money, by all means get someone knowledgeable to do it for you. My current webhost cum webmaster have helped me a lot with the initial steps so here I am, hoping to share this knowledge.

OK, let’s get on with the basics.

FTP – What is it?

Well, it is the way you transfer stuffs from your PC to your server. Your server is located in some remote places. Mine is in the US. so, I need a software to get those files in my PC to the place.

I use Filezilla. I had tried other softwares before but Filezilla is so easy to manage so we just stick to it. It is available for free download.

Go to SourceForge.net and get the download for Filezilla.

Instal it to your PC and you will see an icon. Click it and it will lead you to a window like the below.

You need to get your path and your ID. Enter them :

ftp2

Click QuickConnect and you will see files on both left and right side.

Left is what is on your PC. Right is what is at your server.

ftp1

Now, stop there. Don’t try to click anything yet.

You know why? Because if you double click wrongly, you may cause your files to wipe up the files on your server. LOL, it has happened to me before. Three years ago when I had my first taste of ftp.

The most important file on our server is one which is labelled index.html
(or index dot whatever)

The most important folder on your server is public html. But some hosting doesn’t provide public html but something else.

So, don’t touch anything until I find time to continue part two on how to transfer files. Muahaharr..when I got around to do it.
