New Sitemeter sucks – Is there a better choice?

I like Sitemeter because it provides me real time site traffic information like ‘Referral’ and ‘Who on’? From it, I know if my page has been picked up by some of the social bookmarking services, quoted by some popular blogs or I am having an avalanche of traffic due to other dirty tricks.

But today, Sitemeter has changed its format and it sucks! Whatever happened to those stats? Plus it takes a million years to get the information.

So, beside Google Analytics, does anyone know of any FREE but good and reliable stats meter?

One more thing – Sitemeter has changed the login and needs my email address to activate. The problem is I have forgotten all the emails I used. Blek.

I think this is Sitemeter’s ploy to encourage users to pay for the service. But at US$6.95 per month, it is way too expensive, cost as much as a webhosting fee.

I just switched to Statcounter, and it’s looking real good to me – better than Sitemeter was, in fact. Especially the “Recent Visitor Activity”, which gives me everything I want to see all on one page. It also has “Visitor Paths” which lets me see everything each visitor clicked on.

I definitely agree with Eli about StatCounter. It’s fairly comprehensive, easy to use, and it’s free.

You may also want to look at the hit counters at Bravenet.com. They’re pretty reliable, and they have a variety of styles, if you want to make your hit counter public.

The new sitemeter interface is horrible. I am not happy with it at all. I just cancelled my premium account and will do the same for the other 6 websites I have.

the new sitemeter is now a piece of bloated garbage. As always, they didn’t beta test, or even ask folks what they want.

It also now does not do search word referrals, which I highly used to monitor my SEO.

    total garbage.

Ugh! I hate the new sitemeter so much I just had to take it down.

I heard they’re reverting it back. But I’ve switched to statcounter, just in case they’re not smart enough to do so. :/

    They are rolling back!

Sitemeter has decided to roll back to the old format, due to a botched rollout of the new site. If your cookies are enabled, you should still be able to access your stats.

Go to the main site (http://www.sitemeter.com), and if your cookies are there, click on “Statistics”. Calling up your stats page directly may not work (for some reason).

Check their blog out for the announcement on the failed rollout (http://weblog.sitemeter.com/2008/09/14/our-apologies/).

IMHO, I find Stat Counter used in conjunction with Google Analytics is very good.

Stat Counter allows you to drill down to very detailed information but has a log restriction up to 500 entries.

Google Analytics gives an overview but allows tracking over a historical period.

I haven’t tried Sitemeter but I love Statcounter. I think they’re pretty accurate and offer very good stats.

LOL, so many Sitemeter haters. Thanks for telling me that they have roll back.

Anyway, I use both tracking now, Stat Counter and Sitemeter on my personal blog.

    Thanks!

    Lilian,

Are the statistics you gathered useful? Maybe you could share with us your MoJo on how to use the statistics to boost traffic?

    Yes, I’m a Noob :)

site meters? well, i’m now just using Google Analytics, so far so good. Besides, i also analyse from my EntreCard analytic status.

    Dear bb community,

Google Analytics is good but it aggregates the information together. Stat Counter allows you to drill down to the user level to see what pages the user visited and how long.

Stat Counter is useful for blogs with low traffic like mine since you can find out [USER by USER] whether the paltry number of visitors are actually interested in my blog by the length of time and pages visited or are just dropping cards EntreCard crowd.

Analytics aggregates the visitors together so you don’t get to drill down this info.
