Recently, I have the pleasure of guiding a young man, Cedricang on getting his own domain, setting up a Wordpress blogging platform, finding the plugins and also getting the ideal theme.

I don’t claim to be an expert but I have been through trials and errors and know what works best. However, I do not want to impose or influence too much of my normal requirements on him because he is only 18 years old and hence, his taste and mine definitely differs.

So, I let him have the pleasure of finding the theme he wants on Wordpress Theme viewer. LOL, if you are new to Wordpress, having blogged from Blogspot, the amount of themes available can be mind boggling. It is like walking into a clothing store and everything is for free. You want everything but you can only choose a few. He did choose a few themes and after two days, finally decided on the one he likes. A theme with sky and clouds.

He settled on a three column, left and right side bar with a middle content because he has plenty of add-ons to put on the sidebar. This question from Weblog Tools Collection on the number of sidebars you prefer is rather thought provoking. Do read it because there are many different opinions. Many of them I never thought about.

I have always settled for three-column, fluid with, white background because I need at least two sidebars to accomodate those ads and banners. My current preference is a huge rectangle block on the top of the sidebar so that it remains as a giant billboard. I do not care if my regular readers find them too overwhelming because all they need to look is the main portion. The sidebar information is for the organic traffic, surfers who are looking for an exit.

What about you?
