Good riddance to bad WP plugins

I haven’t been tampering with my blogs much. I don’t post, I don’t update the plugins and didn’t touch any of them except for a couple like my personal and faith blog. It is good to just take a breather sometimes.

However, there is one very, very annoying Wordpress plugin that I finally get rid off. I am not sure if the developer is an attention seeker or a real genius who must get everyone to update his plugins every few days. I seriously do not see any improvement in any SEO after using the plugin. But since I have installed it, I let it stays.

Finally, I have enough of the plugin. I just deleted off the All in one SEO pack. It is one of the most cumbersome, annoying plugin because I need to update it like very few days.

What about you? Do you find the plugin helpful?

I have just upgraded this blog to WP 2.8. I cannot do the auto upgrading from my dashboard because of some problems with comment.php. So, I used ftp to send all the WP 2.8 files to my server.

I do not have time to explore yet but I know the widgets are easier to manage now because we can view several widgets at one go. Previously, it was a pain because we can only manage one widget at a time.

Now, I have to spend a lot of time to upgrade all my 20 Wordpress blogs….Sigh….

Solution for slow Wordpress 2.7 by Bluehost

I was so pissed with the Wordpress 2.7 blogs I host with Bluehost on shared hosting. I do not have problems with my main blogs which is hosted on the VPS server.

So, I shoot a complaint to them through their support ticket. I got a mail that goes, “Dear Customer, It came up pretty quick for me. I checked the server and everything looks good. ”

I guess Bluehost must have a million complaints and they have gotten defensive when we blame the slow speed on their hosting. In turn, they blame our php codes. Being a noob, I do not have much choice so I just followed these steps they gave me to overcome the slow Wordpress 2.7 speed :

Just follow these steps: (Note: It is always a good idea to back up your database before making any changes)

1. Log into your cpanel.
2. Click on phpMyAdmin.
3. On the left will be a list of your databases. Select the one you want to repair/optimize.
4. This will load all of the tables in your database into the right side. At the bottom of this list, there is a link called “Check All”. Click that.
5. Just to the right of the check all link there is a drop down menu that says “With Selected.” Click on that, and choose “repair”.
6. You should get a page that will list all the tables, with “OK” listed next to them. When this is done, look up to the top of the page, and click on the “Structure” tab.
7. This will take you back to the page you saw on step 4.
8. Click “Check All” again, and then choose “Optimize” in the drop down menu.

You should see the same page as in step 6. You’re done!

Many weird MySQL errors can be fixed by this process. I suggest doing these steps frequently to keep your database in good condition.!

I did the above and the speed of my Dashboard loading is a little bit faster now.

So, if you have Wordpress 2.7 that takes forever to load, then, you may want to try this.

I don’t guarantee it works for you though.

Is your pretty, lil blog theme hindering or helping your site?

I am not a creative person. In fact, I am very lazy in Photoshop-ing because the program slows down my Mac and I couldn’t be bothered with beautiful banners or blog themes.

As a Wordpress user, all I need is to find some free blog theme and get working. I rarely hire people to make banners or design any personalised blog theme. I change blog template faster than most bloggers because I get bored with a theme really fast.

To me, all I care is -

1) Is the theme fast to load?
2) Does it mess up when surfed on mobile?
3) Is the banner taking up too much valuable real property which I could stuff banners?
4) Is anyone using the same theme as I am, in the neighbourhood?

and finally, the two most important things are

– Is it good for making money with Google Adsense?

- Is it SEO friendly?

Now, I am going to share just one very important opinion. I may be wrong or I could be right. A lot of bloggers tend to look for unique, personalised blog theme and they like those magazines type.

A magazine type of blog theme is one which has the latest post on the top and then, in columns, the excerpt of the previous posts.

I will tell you why this is a bad idea, in my opinion.

We blog for search engines, not appearances. If you go for appearances, you are going to impress only a few regular visitors. Regular visitors do not help you to make money.

I find that if I have about 5-7 FULL posts on the main page, Google and Yahoo will index some random keywords in amongst those seas of words in the 5-7 posts.

So, if you put all excerpts to your previous posts on the front page, you are not offering important keywords to the search spiders because the spiders do not care if you have gold dusts on your theme. Search engine spiders look for keywords and take those keywords back to Google and these keywords will appear on the search results.

In a gist, if you have a blog and wish to get better search rankings, do not offer dim sums to those spiders. They nibble and get back hungry. Give them a full meal, from appetizers to desserts so that they go back to Google (or yahoo) and vomit out all those keywords to be indexed.

Well, like I said, I could be wrong. Who knows, I am just being a sour grape because I am too lazy to bother with pretty blog themes.

This blog runs on Wordpress 2.7 but…

This is the fifth blog I upgraded to Wordpress 2.7. I notice the followings :

1) The new Wordpress 2.7 folder has over 700+ files. When I am uploading the new files, at least 4-14 files will not get uploaded probably due to my bad internet connection. So, I need to make sure that all those files are manually selected and uploaded.

2) It takes me at least 40 minutes to 2 hours to upgrade just one blog.

3) And the worst problem I face is the awfully long time I need to navigate. It is like the Wordpress 2.7 is so heavy and slow and I have to wait a while to go to each option.

Do you guys face the same thing? Approving comment, send comment to spam, write new post and just about everything on the new dashboard takes an awfully long time to load. I have observed several blogs and I don’t think it is my broadband as other sites load normally.

Yayayaya, all I have for Wordpress 2.7 is complaint after complaint. You can read all the spanking and cool new features from thousand of blogs out there but I seem to be the only one complaining. Hmmm….
