Malaysiakini hotter than Facebook on Google Search

According to Malaysiakini, Google has revealed that Malaysiakini is the fastest rising searched website in Malaysia in 2008.

And to give you guys a little tip, here are the popular search keywords :

Google also found that the economic downturn was clearly on top of mind for many Malaysians.

“There were large increases in the number of searches for ‘murah’ (36% increase), ‘warehouse’ (28% increase) and ’sale’ (19% increase), reflecting Malaysians searching more often online to find the best deals and save money,” said Google in a statement.

“Terms like ‘recession’ (383% increase) and ‘financial crisis’ (136% increase) also saw significant spikes in search volume when the global markets were falling in September and October.”

So, go work on the SEO of those keywords if you are banking in on Malaysian traffic. Me? I’d rather go where the greenbacks are.

Hard core blogging needs creativity

I was having dinner just now. A boring dinner that is not worth mentioning. A dinner that everyone have around the world.

However, being the food blogger, I have to find conversation pieces in my every day meals because that’s what food bloggers do. We have to come up with something interesting to write. In real life, it is impossible to find something to write about the mundane. And I do not believe in making my life too miserable, robbing off the joy of eating, just for blogging sake. I refuse to go out of my way to prepare meals, taking nice photos and other chores when I don’t feel like it. So, I shall have to find something to mention for the next blog post, even if there is nothing.

But hard core blogging means we have to find something to say, even if it is the ordinary. So, I am glad that I have that extra spark where I can find the extraordinary out of the boring stuffs. Of course, the spark doesn’t stay there all the time. Only sometimes, when I know that I am running out of things to blog.

So, are you ready for making money with your blogs? Do you have the endurance to blog hard core? Do you have the creativity to write something that someone else haven’t done yet? In niche blogging, it is very hard to find something that someone else haven’t write. Usually, before I posted about a new eating place, I will Google and see how many have written about the place and a quick glance will tell me not to repeat what others have said. Otherwise, we cannot stand out from the pack.

And that’s another blogging tip – Be creative to attract regular readers.

A blog post is just as important

If you wish to make money through your blogs, one of the thing to remember is – Always treat each page or each blog post as a website on its own. Each blog post has its own value if you get it right. Sometimes, we only need two or three pages in a blog with hundreds of pages to make money. It is like the gold nugget hidden amongst the hundreds of blog craps we write.

Here’s how to find that gold nugget -

a) Find out the internal pageranks of your blog posts. You can do this by googling ‘check internal pagerank’. (I am not going to help by giving you the links. Hehehe)

b) Keep an eye on those spams coming in. Usually, the spammers know the value of our blog posts and they will spam that few pages with trackbacks and comments.

c) Check your organic traffic and know what are some of the keywords that bring in the traffic.

d) Analyse your Google analytics.

Here’s how to make money from them.

Since most of these old blog posts are rather old pages, you can stuff as many ads as you want because your regular readers do not see them anymore. Who cares if the ads overwhelm your smart thoughts. Organic traffic or those random surfers who stumbled into that page are not in the mood to read how cute your child is, for example. Probably, in that post, you have a mention of some highchairs or baby stroller or something like that.

Go for the kill. Stuffs Amazon or any kind of affiliates widgets or products recommendation there with the products your surfers may most likely buy.

Add an extra Google ads there, if you have not already used up the 3 ads per page. Remember Google Adsense only only 3 ads per page.

When you have find those gold nugget pages, remember to nurture and take good care of them.

You can do this by occasionally mention it in your newer blog posts. For example, you can write something and mention baby high chair and link to that old post. It helps with the search ranking.

In conclusion – Treat each post of your blog like it is a site on its own and soon, you will be making money from them.

How long does your site take to load?

We Malaysians are a frustrated lot. We are at the mercies of the internet service providers like Streamyx, Jaring and the other smaller players. We know our internet connection sucks max.

I have just tried for the 100th time to stumble someone’s post and it just won’t move. It is darn frustrating to surf at night because the internet speed over at my place is too slow.

So, as a gentle reminder to those bloggers who have fancy schmancy theme or template, plenty of plugins pulling in all sorts of ‘popular post, most view post, top ten commented yadda yadda yadda’ frills and lots of photos plus tracking codes, do keep your blog simpler.

If your traffic is meant to attract Malaysians, all the more you should trim it because many people dislike waiting for a page to completely download. Sometimes, we may not notice how slow our site is because of the cookies and cache stored in our PC. However, those who come by has to wait for a long time to see all the photos and etc.

The other thing you may want to observe is – Are your contents loaded first or do people have to wait for the sidebars and top banner to complete first?

I noticed that many food bloggers have these problems whereby their contents hang while we wait for the sidebars with lots of linked in pictures to download first. My food blogs too have the same problems but I am reluctant to rectify the matter.

If you really want to reduce your loading time, there are several things you can do (my reasons for not doing them in brackets).

1) Reduce the number of posts on the main page (but I like at least 5 posts on the main page)

2) Reduce the size of your photos (but I like 500pixel width photos for the oomph)

3) Cut off your posts and add ‘read more’ (but my readers hate to click ‘read more’ so I never use that)

4) Keep your sidebar contents to the minimum, trim them often (I am keeping the minimum but who can do without money making ads, right?)

5) Do not use tracking codes which you don’t rely on (I only keep Google analytics and a couple of other codes that make money for me)

If you want to know how long it takes for your site to load, just google for it. There are several sites which tell you how long your site takes to load.

Remember : Sometimes, eye candy theme serves no purposes but instead, turn off potential visitors. Less is more!

Why must we track our traffic?

A few of you have asked and some emailed me to ask why I am so dependent on tracking my blog traffic. Sorry I never got around to reply the emails because I was rather busy with the candlelight vigils and the much awaited change of Government. Still waiting with bated breath and keeping my eyes on the latest news.

So, why do we need to track our blog traffic? I have written a post title “How do I increase traffic to my website or blog.” In Step Two and Step Six, I talked about tracking blog traffic.

STEP TWO – Put a stat counter to track traffic

Instal a stat counter. You can get it free from a few sites. I stick with Sitemeter and other bloggers like StatCounter.

After you have set up a blog, you will need to know if your blog is read by anyone. That’s why it is essential to put a stat counter. Otherwise, how will you know if you are getting any traffic? If you use Wordpress.com, i.e. the free wordpress, they have a stat analysis for you. Otherwise, sign up for the basic, free account with Sitemeter, Statcounter or others to get the code and paste it to your blog. At the same time, sign up with Google Webmaster Central for a more detailed analysis.

STEP SIX – Watch your blog traffic like a hawk, analyse

Start getting obsessed with your stat counter. Look if you have any visitors. Search where they come from. And when you first get your very first organic traffic, then, celebrate.

Note that these steps are more for those who wish to make money through blogging. If you are writing a personal blog and couldn’t care less about traffic, then, forget about traffic.

I rely heavily on my Sitemeter because I usually have some tricks which are secrets to bait for traffic. I need to know if the fishes are biting, you see. At the same time, I have the perverted obsession of getting on front page on search results. For example, I wrote a post on the DPM Najib blog and this morning, I found that I have reached #1 for my personal blog and #3 for this blog for certain keywords.

In other words, with traffic analysis, I can use it to gauge the effectiveness of my SEO efforts. At the same time, I know if people dissed or praised me because I can see traffic coming from other URLs.

I have many blogs and each of them have a few pages which attract a lot of traffic. With stat counter, I know if I am hot, or not. Hehehe.
