Now everyone blogs, including Tun Dr. M
I have often said that the prospect of making money from blogs in Malaysia is very bright. Bloggers have a totally new image which is much more respectable and acceptable. (credible or not, that’s another question)
Just today, I was at the DAP’s official opening of their service centre in my area. While hanging around, waiting for the Chief Minister to arrive (the Penang CM is also the State Assemblyman of my area), all the people there were talking about what they just read from this blog, that blog and so on.
Gone were the days when they relied on printed media which came one day later. Now, the politicians blog direct from the Parliament and the regular Joe and Jane rely of these blogs for news.
So, if you are still not convince that blog is the new black, I do not know what else can convince you. Even our former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir blogs. His blog url use his nickname Che Det. The domain name is http://www.chedet.com but Tun M blog is hosted on blogger.
Are you working hard on your blog to attract local advertisers yet? From my experience, I usually make my blog either for local Malaysian readers or I cater it for international traffic. Both cannot be lumped into one because if we do that, we lose out from both ends.
Local ads income are getting much better but local advertisers want a blog that has Malaysian traffic and Malaysian flavour.
International surfers will not be able to relate to our blog if we ‘Malaysian-ised’ our blog. So, what I do is to seperate my blogs. Even for my recipes and food blogs, I am beginning to slice them, re-dress them and ‘cook ‘ them for different tastebuds.
Blog is the new black. Start working on it now because the prospect of making money from them is bright. Think of your blog as a magazine with lots of ad spaces for rental.

What Malaysian Dreamgirl.tv webmaster need to improve
As some of you may know, Malaysian Dreamgirl contest is ongoing right now. They promote it over the airwaves, on TV, in the media and fashion related magazines. It is a reality tv show available for viewing online. As Malaysian Dreamgirls reality tv is an online show, the webmaster of Malaysian Dreamgirl ought to work harder on their Search Engine Optimisation or SEO.
I have noted that their original site does not rank well for many crucial keywords. Obviously, the webmaster has not thought of the importance of SEO and SERP.
They have to remember that when people sees a promo on TV, read in the media or heard it over the radio, they will want to surf the site. However, they normally cannot remember the complete url. What they have are bits and pieces of pertinent keywords such as :
malaysian dreamgirls
malaysia dreamgirls
malaysian dream girl contest
malaysian model dreamgirls
fiqa malaysia dreamgirl
hanis malaysia dreamgirl
nadia malaysia dreamgirl
and so on. I have mentioned it elsewhere that the Malay contestants have a better chance of winning because the contest depends on weekly SMS voting. In terms of numbers, there are more Malays in our country. It is not a racial matter but people tend to vote for someone their race if the contestants are equally good (or bad). I noted that many of the searches are for fiqa (who was voted out last week), hanis and nadia.
Right now, the Malaysian Dreamgirl organiser appears to have focussed only on selected bloggers to help them promote. They failed to see that when they do that, they are getting the same group of readers.
I think they should promote it on Adwords as well and book all those blogs who mentioned Malaysian Dreamgirls or any one of those related keywords. There are lots of positive and also negative blog posts and many of these negative ones have appeared high on the search results. Bloggers have herd mentality. When they read something negative, they will totally stay off the issue unless it is really a nice controversy, then they will probably check it out.
For a hugely promoted online tv reality show with a lot of prizes, I would have thought that they get shitloads of traffic. So, I decided to check Alexa traffic and see :
The above is the traffic trend for the last seven days compared to my personal blog. I am merely using my personal blog as a yardstick.
And below is the traffic for the month. As you can see, it is not at all impressive if you consider the amount of promotion they have put into the show. The girls have appeared on The Star, NTV7, some men magazine, some fashion show all over town and etc.
So, how can they improve?
1) Do a quick campaign on Adwords and start making your show appears on the Adsense of every blogger who quoted Malaysian Dreamgirls. Buy up different keywords.
2) Remember that you need to spread out your bloggers’ reach and not concentrate on only Kenny Sia, Shaolin Tiger, KimCun, Timothy, Nuffnang and their friends because their readers are almost the same group. Have you buy advertorials through Nuffnang to be placed on the famous Malay language bloggers and entertainment site?
3) Start optimise your site with more keyword rich sentences and make some meta tags.
4) Give the contestants a Wordpress Multi-User’s blog, darn it! Let the girls blog! Let them fight it out online on their blogs. Camwhore, whatever. Of course, the organizer can always supervise to avoid controversies. How can you call it an online show when your girls were not even allowed to get online? Doh!
5) Start heavy promotion through Nuffnang. The show is almost ending and heck, I have not personally see any banner ads on the girls on local bloggers sites.
If you want to earn that RM1 SMS, you gotta promote heavily. If your show is an online version, you should make your presence felt everywhere on the blogsphere.
Disclaimer : I am not paid for this long post. I just enjoy using case studies of how local webmasters failed to see the importance of SEO. It is all about the race to the first position. It is all about shitting your url on every page, search engines and at every turn so that surfers cannot run away or failed to find your blog. These few days, I have noticed that Malaysian Dreamgirls result turned up my personal blog post.
I hope this post is helpful to bloggers who want to get high traffic. It is that simple. SEO. How? Read my blog. And did I hear someone ask - Where is the link to the Malaysian Dreamgirl? Google it, you lazy bum. Why should I SEO for them, huh?
Nuffnang new addition - CTR evaluation analytics
This is just fresh out of Nuffnang’s blog. You can read the blog post from Nuffnang on their CTR click rating system.
Basically, you can view which is the best performing ad unit from the number of stars. Five is the best and 1 is the least.
As can be seen, on this blog, both unit works equally well for me. However, there are certain blogs that seem to fare better in large rectangle and not so much on skyscrapper.
So, how does this info helps us? Well, I will certainly go for the most stars ad unit and reduce the number of ads on my blog to only two at the maximum. As you can see, most of my blogs only have one ad unit.
The less is better. Less is more.
Is your blog living in a ‘bad’ neighbourhood?
I read that if our blog is hosted on some servers with bad neighbourhood, we run the risk of getting spanked by Google too. The websites from the same server share the same IP and hence, if some of those have blackhat activities, i.e. producing link farms or other methods of gaming the SERP, then, we may be affected too.
So, after my earlier post about these two bloggers’ blog who lost their PR, I find out from YouGetSignal.com and true enough, the two bloggers I mentioned are hosted on the same server. I will not give their URLs because I don’t need their blind followers to flame me for the wrong reasons.
Now, are you living in a bad neighbourhood? What other websites are hosted on the same server as you? Curious to find out? You can check from YouGetSignal.com and other sites. Once you entered your blog URL, it will shows you a long list, or short one (as I am using a VPS) of websites ‘living’ with you.
Easter break and weathervane
Alright, I am taking a break from blogging for Easter. Today is Good Friday, followed by Easter Vigil on Saturday and Easter on Sunday.
At this time of the year, I normally reflect back on what I want and what exactly God wants. It is a time for us to recollect our directions in life and step back and think.
On Wednesday, hubby, my little boy and I went for a long walk on the hills. I found this weathervane. A weathervane is this signature metal cock and four directions of north, east, south and west. We don’t often see weathervanes around here and these are probably remnants of our colonial past. The weathervane is found at some old bungalow.
In life, we need to have flexibility like these weathervanes. We need to go where the wind blows. Sometimes, I blog for money. Sometimes, I blog for fun. Sometimes, I blog for fame and recognition. Sometimes, I blog for influence and power. Some may find the descriptions of fame, influence, power and money distasteful. But hey, who am I lying? Who are you lying? We need these purposes and directions to do something well.
So, do take stock of what exactly you want from blogging. If you have no hang-ups where God is concern, do take time and ask Him to guide you. I pray that the Lord will continue to shower me with a generous heart and trust Him with all my heart. I hope I will have the faith of ‘Freely I give (sharing of information with others) , freely I receive (blessings from God)’. It is only in giving that we receive (our blessings from God).
Anyway, the walk in the woods, taking in the cold air of the hills have done a lot of good for my health and also mind. It is good to exercise more as I find that a few days off blogging will actually make me come back with more ideas on what to write next. So, remember to take the break or at least find out how chelation therapy can help those blood to flow better. I have not tried it before but friends insisted that it sort of flush their system for a better health.
Therefore, Have a Blessed Easter to those who celebrate the Risen Christ. Hallelujah!
Thank you, spammers for helping me earn Adsense
I have a few new blogs on niche topics that are set up for Adsense income. (no, you do not know they exist :P ) Thanks to my spammers, I do not actually need to study and analyse too hard.
So, I have this great tip for you. Watch out and note down which are your posts that get spammed most with stupid comments like ‘I do not understand some part about blablabla topic but…’ or ‘Your post on etcetcetc blalblabla is awesome….’. These are all automatic spamming softwares that target specific keywords. They try to penetrate into our blog posts by leaving a link back to their site.
Those posts that are being spammed often means you have a goldmine there. Find out what are the keywords there that attract them and work on that old post.
I will also check the CPC value for those keywords and if they are worth optimizing, just make a few new posts on the same topic and link it to your old post. Of course, you need to be natural about it.
Thanks to my spammers, they have helped me to cut down time spent to analyse. These spammers are smart blackhatters (black hat = people who use tactics not allowed by the internet gods, white hats = people like me who go by the rules) who spent a lot of time to work on getting high paying keywords. They helped me to enhance my Adsense income. It is not even the middle of the month and I have doubled my Adsense income. Thank you, spammers. Keep coming. I love you all. Muackkkkkssss.
Ten words that should set the alarm bells that the deal is a scam
And the most eye catching of all - Huge red fonts and yellow highlight.
Thank me already. I have just saved you a lot of money, broken dreams and wasted time. I hope you won’t get fleeced in future.
Talking about scam, there is one product call the celebrity teeth whitener that a lot of people have claimed to be a scam. Many people were searching for celebrity sexy teeth whitener a scam and I took the initiative to help them solve the mystery by providing the address where they can claim a refund. I personally think we bloggers should be responsible in our posts and not lead people to scame or getting cheated.
