Do you have a Yahoo Geocities site somewhere?

For the longest time, I have been meaning to move my Yahoo Geocities site to either a Wordpress.com, Blogger.com or even my own hosting. However, the sites I have are not exactly the most cheerful site. So, I never do anything about them.

Some of my Yahoo Geocities sites are more than six years old and they are my very first venture into web building. It is like the beginning of my online adventure. From someone who doesn’t know html, I managed to grasp it after learning to make websites using Yahoo page builder.

Then, through the years, I advanced to where I am now. I know a bit of web mastering, web hosting, own several sites, has a virtual private server and make lots of money online.

Now, the end is near. Yahoo Geocities is going to close down all Yahoo Geocities sites. Here is a notice I get :

Important notice: GeoCities is closing.

Dear Yahoo! GeoCities customer,

We’re writing to let you know that Yahoo! GeoCities, our free web site building service and community, is closing on October 26, 2009.

On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files.

My first Yahoo Geocities site was made by a lady from Texas, USA for me. The second one was made by me. Back then, midi files were like the most awesome thing on earth. Now, we have advanced to videos and even live tv.

Yet, the song ‘Winds Beneath My Wings’ still breaks my heart. So, I won’t be moving anytime soon. I shall wait till September 24th is over before I do that.

Do you 666 or 755?

I have upgraded several blogs to Wordpress 2.8. It is pretty easy when you just need to press the Upgrade button from your Dashboard and leave the whole thing to upgrade itself.

However, my webhost is rather strict with security nowadays because I am too obnoxious LOL. So, I can’t upgrade some of my blogs using the easy way.

So, do you 666 or 755 or even worst 777?

If you don’t know the meaning of these numbers, you are probably :

1) A gambler who only see numbers as lucky numbers that can strike the jackpot

2) You are a good Christian and good Christians don’t like 666

3) You probably own your own domains and hostings but clueless about these numbers and deserve to get hack one of these days

Where is your blog hosted? Malaysia? USA? Russia?

And that makes me wonder…..

if she has hosted with a US company, will the police be able to pursue the matter?

Will the US webhosting gives a shit to such demand?

Her site is hosted by my very first webhost, INTEGRICITY. It is a company in KL. So, the police can go ruffle some feathers there.

Actually, I seriously wonder if the police has the nose to sniff at the right place or do they just use a long stick and swipe every leads, whether useful or not? Once, I brought some evidence to the police station using my thumbdrive. They wanted to keep the thumbdrive as ‘bukti’! I was like WTF, just transfer the blardy files I am giving you to your computer. Why the hell do they need the thumbdrive?

So, folks, do you think it is safer to host in the USA? My server is in the USA but my webhost is in my neighbourhood. So, taukeh Bryan, apa maciam? When they ring my bell, they ring your bell too, ok?

Arrggh…dont’ get me started on the politics, intimidation, conspiracy and other stuffs or else this post will never end.

Who is my webhost – IXIY

A few people have written to me to ask about my webhost. So, to save replying to all the emails, let me put down in one post and next time, I just post the link.

I have a lot of blogs to make money. I also have a forum that eats up a lot of CPU resources. My sites have been hacked a few times and sometimes, the hackers are just doing it for fun.

Eventhough I know a bit about webmastering and had owned my own websites since 2002, I prefer to leave all the technical things to a reliable webmaster/webhost to deal with all the nitty-gritty stuffs.

So, IXIY comes in as the answer to my requirements. I do not like to deal with too many headaches of hacking, spamming and other stuffs. If you use Wordpress, you have to deal with it somehow because it is easily hack-able. I want a reliable hosting which ensure that my sites run 24/7 without downtime because downtime means losing money or worse, having to refund money because ads are not working.

A lot of people asked me how much I pay for my webhosting. I cannot reveal because the amount may shock you. My per month fee is more expensive than most people annual webhosting fees. But then, they only use one or two blogs while I have 20 over domains and one forum. I also use all kind of scripts that eats up the CPU resources and hence, I need virtual private hosting.

Therefore, never compare webhosting packages based on the dollar amount. The main criteria is to find out if the company is reliable. There are fly by night webhosts which disappear over night. There are companies which never bother to reply you. Or cheap hosting where they give you links to read and tell you, “next time read our tutorial before asking, you moron!’ (ok, maybe they never use the word moron but they do tell you curtly the answer is found on their tutorial). Also don’t be fooled with gigantic space which you probably never need at all.

I have two webhosts. One is IXIY and the other Bluehost whose service is getting from mediocre to bad. So far, IXIY still lives up to expectations. IXIY belongs to a local guy, a blogger I know who sets up his own webhosting. However, my sites are hosted in USA and not in Malaysia. That way, if I SOS to my webhost to press the red button, I know I can get him during the day (contrary to many webhosting companies who boasted 24/7 service but when I am awake, they are still sleeping). What red button? Just in case, the authorities come knocking on my door to tell me my blog insulted someone. You get the drift?

Solution for slow Wordpress 2.7 by Bluehost

I was so pissed with the Wordpress 2.7 blogs I host with Bluehost on shared hosting. I do not have problems with my main blogs which is hosted on the VPS server.

So, I shoot a complaint to them through their support ticket. I got a mail that goes, “Dear Customer, It came up pretty quick for me. I checked the server and everything looks good. ”

I guess Bluehost must have a million complaints and they have gotten defensive when we blame the slow speed on their hosting. In turn, they blame our php codes. Being a noob, I do not have much choice so I just followed these steps they gave me to overcome the slow Wordpress 2.7 speed :

Just follow these steps: (Note: It is always a good idea to back up your database before making any changes)

1. Log into your cpanel.
2. Click on phpMyAdmin.
3. On the left will be a list of your databases. Select the one you want to repair/optimize.
4. This will load all of the tables in your database into the right side. At the bottom of this list, there is a link called “Check All”. Click that.
5. Just to the right of the check all link there is a drop down menu that says “With Selected.” Click on that, and choose “repair”.
6. You should get a page that will list all the tables, with “OK” listed next to them. When this is done, look up to the top of the page, and click on the “Structure” tab.
7. This will take you back to the page you saw on step 4.
8. Click “Check All” again, and then choose “Optimize” in the drop down menu.

You should see the same page as in step 6. You’re done!

Many weird MySQL errors can be fixed by this process. I suggest doing these steps frequently to keep your database in good condition.!

I did the above and the speed of my Dashboard loading is a little bit faster now.

So, if you have Wordpress 2.7 that takes forever to load, then, you may want to try this.

I don’t guarantee it works for you though.
