Onward March ended with goofing

At the beginning of March, I tried to get back to work hard on making money online. For a few days, I did. I had a few paid posts which pays well. But along the way, once again, I dropped off.

Now, it is the last day of March already. My income is certainly lower than February. In fact, the income from Adsense for March is probably the lowest in the last one year. I see it as a trend that affects all Adsense publishers so I am not too worked up on that.

I had also left PayPerPost or IZEA and taken off the codes from a lot of my blogs. Some other paid post companies set down this rule of ‘choose us or PPP, either or, never both’ and due to the fifty USD cents gimmick by PayPerPost , I feel it is not worth to stick to PayPerPost anymore.

Meanwhile, I notice a trend in buying links in old posts. I am not sure if Google will eventually find out about this method of selling links. It is risky but it pays. So, I used it on some of my not-ever going to get PR blogs.

March has been a quiet month for me. There are no pagerank shake-ups, no new make money online buzz and nothing earth shattering.

So if you are new to blogging and think that blogging can make you money, sorry lah, you are too late. You missed the boat. The exciting journey was over. Gone were the days when I can call myself 12kmom.

However, for those of us who have a string of passive incomes, we are still doing fine. In fact, with my husband back to the work , I can splurge on digital stuffs again. I just bought a digital video camcorder yesterday. Now, I am planning for some exciting blogging project.

I don’t know if April is going to be a good or bad month. But what matters is I am not stressed out over the situation as I don’t depend on my blogging income. Thank God and hope things pick up soon.

Online income and recession

There is so much talk about the US recession being an L shape and Malaysia recession being a U shape and not a V shape etc etc. Being an average income family, I do not worry so much about the recession hitting my family.

However, I can foresee it affecting my online income. Recession is definitely going to affect the make money blogging sector. When companies stopped spending so much on advertising and consumers stopped shopping, the oasis will dry up and we will be fighting amongst ourselves to get a piece of the cake.

A lot of enterprising individuals are already promoting blogging for money as a way to supplement the daily wages. So, there are going to be an increase of bloggers in this already saturated blogosphere. When times are bad, more will resort to black hat methods which make it even harder to make money. One sneaky black hatter is equivalent to 100 or even more noob bloggers.

Then, we are going to see our blog posts being ripped and reuse by these new bloggers. As it is, a church friend already told me she is attending a blogging course, given free of charge by someone. This someone said blogging will make money and recipe blogs are the best money making blog. It was hinted that it is not hard to make recipe blogs because recipes are easily found in books. Good thing it was in church that the conversation took place or I will curse the person to hell. You see, the person gives free blogging lesson but sells webhosting and domain. I told my friend that blogging is free and one does not need to invest in any hosting or domain until one is very sure that blogging is enjoyable.

So has recession already affected your income? My blogging income was reduced several months ago but I think it was due to my diversion to do other things like taking up courses, doing volunteer work and spending time with my family. I do notice that advertisers are getting more demanding and only want high PR blogs. Some companies demand that we only blog for them and not other companies.

In a recession like this, we are at the mercies of the demanding companies and we either follow their rules or forget about making money blogging. Me? I will stick to my positive views that businesses still need to do their SEO and need to buy links and paid posts. They still need good quality blogs with good PR to do so. So, I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping to survive, albeit on lower income.

Three days, only 3-day is all it takes to get organic traffic to a new blog

About a week ago, I activated one of my dormant domain. I bought the domain for more than a year and never bother to even set up a Wordpress blog on it. But I went and set up a new Wordpress blog for that domain.

I added three posts.

I added a Sitemeter.

Then, I wait for traffic.

Within three days, MSN live search is already sending me lots of organic traffic.

After four days, Google has indexed the site.

Then, after about a week, I pasted my Google Adsense codes. So far, not clicks yet.

But it is very encouraging because I didn’t do any SEO to this new blog. I didn’t link it from my old blogs with pagerank because the blog is meant to be anonymous.

If you want faster indexing and getting organic traffic, you can link it from your old blogs. Or you can wait three days.

Questions on getting on top search engine results and replying comments

I have two questions which I hope to reply in a post:

HOW TO GET ON TOP OF THE SEARCH ENGINE RESULTS?

Hi Lilian I am a newbie was wondering how a site be at the top search engine results. Your expert opinion is much appreciated. Thanks. (arlene)

Arlene has an interesting hobby of making bento. Bento is that cute and adorable Japanese lunch box and Arlene’s blog on making bento is available on her bento blog.

So, how does a blog gets on the top pages of the search results? Well, it is almost an impossible task because everyone wants to be on #1 page. But from my experiences here are some ways to help :

1) Name your blog with the topic, e.g. this blog has no fanciful names but Make Money.

2) When you make a post, try to make your blog title relevant. Like ‘How to make a bento’. And if that’s what you are targeting, keep repeating these few words in your blog posts as well.

3) Without making people bored, try to use those few words again. With some creativity, one can actually use the few keywords and add with some other words to make a different topic. Like, “how to make money with google adsense” and the next time, maybe “make money is so hard to do”. So, that make money keep popping up in your blog posts.

4) However, don’t mess with Google because their spiders can trace it when you repeated too many times. For example, for fun I posted a post with only, ‘i am bored’ and then, I repeated the sentence several times. Immediately, Google knows and give me no ads.

5) If you have a circle of friends, you can ask them to give you some mention using a certain keywords. Like for me, I have several blogs (hosted on different places) so when it is relevant, I link to my own blogs. Like best recipes will go to my food blog. Or when I talk about christian blog, it goes to my faith blog. Again, don’t do it too often or you can get penalised for gaming the results. Google is very, very smart in tracking these.

6) Use a stats meter like Sitemeter or Google Analytics or even Nuffnang analytics to see how people find you. Then, write a few more posts with that keywords. Recently, I got addicted to watch Hong Kong TVB drama The Gem of Life and I made some funny observations on it. Now, I am getting traffic for that 82 parts boring-can-die series. I just watched episode 56 of The Gem of Life online and almost fall asleep because it is that boring. In fact, I am writing this post while I was watching episode 56 of Gem of Life.

All the above are ‘live examples’, so open your eyes big big and learn the trick. I am not always so generous but looking at how passionate you are with your bento blog, I don’t mind giving you some tips.

There are other tricks but those are risky steps so I don’t share.

Meanwhile, allie asked if it is ok if we ignore some of our comments. Well, it depends on what kind of blog you own. I usually make it a point to answer those comments which I know are absolutely directed at me, from people I know.

But if these are my subsidiaries blogs, like my food blogs or make money blog, then, I only do so if I have time. I do not feel obligated to reply each and every comment simply because I do not have time to do so. Moreover, on this blog, I know majority of commentors are commenting just because they learn from some SEO guru-wannabe that one can get better ranking by commenting. Well, I won’t bother about those comments because they are leeching on my blog for their own interests. Some of these comments are actually from softwares, whereby the person purchase some programme and it automatically go to every relevant blog (using robots) and leave the comments. For example, the other day, I wrote a post about antidepressant for kids. After a while, I am getting so many comments from people who have antidepressant blogs. Since it is my faith blog, I deleted every single comment because I am not so generous to help people sell their antidepressants.

I also have eyes on the blogsphere and if a certain blogger is making an ass of herself/himself by commenting in almost all Malaysian blogs, then, I will pretend I never see them.

Our blog is our own territory. I never let my blog readers or commentors to dictate what I post and I will tell them to fly kite when they overstepped that boundary. Hehehe.
